One of the most common questions from NLV holders approaching their renewal is: how long will it take? The answer depends significantly on which Spanish province you live in, the time of year, and the complexity of your application. Here is what to expect in 2026.
Typical NLV Renewal Processing Times
The Spanish immigration system is decentralised, so processing times vary considerably between Oficinas de Extranjería. Based on 2024 and 2025 experience:
- Fast provinces (Murcia, Navarre, La Rioja): 3–6 weeks
- Average provinces (Valencia, Andalusia, Canary Islands): 6–12 weeks
- Slower provinces (Madrid, Catalonia, Balearic Islands): 3–6 months
Madrid and Barcelona tend to have the longest processing times due to the sheer volume of applications. If you live in one of these provinces, apply as early as possible within your window. For a full overview, visit our Spain NLV renewal guide. For full details, see our requirements checklist.
The Official Processing Window
You can submit your NLV renewal application:
- Up to 60 days before your current TIE expires — this is the recommended window
- Up to 90 days after your TIE expires — using the extemporaneous (late) renewal procedure. Your status remains legal during this period if you filed in time.
In practice, applying at the 60-day mark gives you maximum flexibility. If the process takes longer than expected, you will not run into problems with an expired TIE while waiting.
What Happens While You Wait
Once you have submitted your renewal application, you will receive a resguardo de solicitud — a receipt confirming your application has been accepted. This document is critically important:
- It proves your legal status is maintained while the renewal is being processed
- It allows you to travel within the Schengen Area (though re-entry back to Spain requires care — take legal advice if you plan to travel internationally while your renewal is pending)
- It serves as evidence of legal status if asked by employers, banks, or landlords
Keep multiple copies of your resguardo. It has replaced your TIE as your proof of legal residence for the duration of the processing period.
How to Check Your Application Status
You can track the status of your NLV renewal online at:
- sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es — using your NIE and the reference number from your resguardo
- Or by contacting your local Oficina de Extranjería directly by phone or email
In practice, online tracking is often unreliable or slow to update. Many applicants find that the first indication of a decision is an SMS notification or a letter to their registered address.
What Can Delay Your Renewal
Several factors can extend processing beyond the typical timeframe:
- Requests for additional documentation (requerimiento) — if the officer finds something missing or unclear, they will issue a formal request. You typically have 10 days to respond.
- Summer months (July–September) — staffing at immigration offices reduces, and processing slows noticeably.
- Complex income documentation — multiple income sources, foreign currencies, or unusual income types take longer to verify.
- High-volume provinces — Madrid and Barcelona are perennially backlogged.
- National holidays and regional festivals — offices close, and accumulated applications create backlogs.
When Your New TIE is Ready
Once approved, you will be notified to collect your new TIE card from your local national police station (comisaría). You will need:
- Your resguardo of the renewal application
- Your passport
- The original approval letter or notification
- Proof of payment of the TIE card fee (Modelo 790, code 012 — approximately €16)
TIE collection appointments often also have waits of 1–4 weeks after the approval notification, particularly in major cities. Book your appointment on sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es as soon as you receive your approval.
Using a Specialist to Manage Your Renewal Timeline

- Correct submission timing to avoid the window lapsing
- Fast response to any requerimientos (document requests)
- Tracking of your application status and proactive follow-up
- Peace of mind — particularly if you have complex income or have been outside Spain for extended periods
